Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Locum Associate Editor (Maternity cover for a minimum of 9 months)
ca £28,000–30,000 per annum pro rata (depending on experience)
Part-time (21 hours a week)
Start date: April 2012
RSTMH is an international development charity that promotes and advances the study, control and prevention of disease in the tropics. It plays a leading role globally in increasing awareness of advances in, and issues related to, tropical medicine and international health.
We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated individual to work within the in-house editorial team on both RSTMH journals, Transactions of The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (published monthly) and International Health (published quarterly).
The successful applicant will be responsible for the preparation of manuscripts for publication, including copyediting and proofreading text for sense, consistency, spelling, grammar and house style. The role also involves supporting the work of the Managing Editor with the peer-review process, making decisions on manuscripts and commissioning relevant articles.
Meticulous attention to detail and excellent organisational skills are essential, as is experience of on-screen editing. Candidates should be confident with using MS Word and Excel and it would be helpful if they also have experience of using online manuscript submission and peer-review systems. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are particularly important as the role involves working with authors, referees, editorial board members and journal readers, as well as external and internal staff.
A degree in biomedical sciences is essential, as is a broad knowledge and interest in the natural and medical sciences. Experience of working in an STM publishing environment (minimum 2 years) and familiarity with the peer-review process are also essential. Experience in making decisions on manuscripts would be advantageous but is not essential as training will be given.
Based in Holborn, the post offers 25 days holiday per year (pro rata), a pension and the opportunity for flexible working arrangements.
