Executive
The affairs of the Society are directed by a Council consisting of a President, President-elect (alternate years), two Vice-Presidents and eighteen Councillors together with the Honorary Secretaries, the Honorary Treasurer, the Editor and any Local Secretaries visiting London. Provision is made for representatives from academic and official institutions to serve on Council in the interest of human and veterinary tropical medicine. The general business of the Society is carried on by an Executive Committee consisting of the President, Vice-Presidents, President-elect (alternate years), Honorary Secretaries and the Honorary Treasurer under the direction of Council.
Local Secretaries
Local secretaries are appointed by Council to act on behalf of the Society in various countries. They are generally responsible for promoting the interests of tropical medicine through the Society and its Fellows, particularly in their area. Their main functions are to correspond with and advise the Honorary Secretaries on matters of interest that come to their notice, to nominate candidates eligible for Fellowship, and to forward papers or specimens with a view to their being brought before the Society.
Education and Training Committee
The E&T Committee was formed as a result of a re-organization of Society affairs with the aim of formalising our involvement in all aspects of education and training of doctors and scientists with an interest in tropical medicine and hygiene.
Fellowship
RSTMH invites candidates for Fellowship and welcomes new Fellows. Please see our section on applying for Fellowship.
Honorary Fellowship
Distinguished members of the medical and veterinary professions and persons of eminence in other departments of science connected with tropical medicine are eligible for election by Council, on the President's nomination, as Honorary Fellows.
Subscriptions
The annual subscription becomes due in advance on first of April each year. Fellows may select from the following options:
- REGULAR FELLOWSHIP including the Transactions in print plus on-line access and the archive for £85 p.a.
- ELECTRONIC FELLOWSHIP with on-line access to the Transactions and the archive for £65 p.a.
- LOW INCOME COUNTRY FELLOWSHIP with on-line access to the Transactions and the archive for £30 p.a.
- THREE YEAR FULL SUBSCRIPTIONS are available for £250; FIVE YEAR FULL SUBSCRIPTIONS are available for £415.
A student rate subscription of £15 p.a. is available for full-time registered students (maximum 3 years) and is intended for those studying for a first or second degree, first postdoctoral qualification or approved university diploma course of up to one year. Evidence of the student’s status and duration of study period must be provided at the time of payment.
The Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene is sent to Fellows of the Society on the understanding that the journal is for their own use and will not be passed to a library or institution.
President’s Fund
The President’s Fund was set up in 1990 to help pay the subscription of a few deserving Fellows who for financial reasons would be otherwise unable to join the Society. Candidates for support from the President's Fund must come from and reside in a developing country. Preference will be given to those from countries at the lower end of a list of countries ranked by economic status. Applicants to the President’s Fund should provide a written statement explaining their need for assistance and a letter of support from a senior colleague, who need not be a Fellow of the Society. Applications will be considered by the President’s Fund Committee and if successful, a subscription to the Society will be supported initially for 3 years. An application form is available from the Society.
Meetings
The Society holds regular half-day, full-day, evening and occasional residential meetings in London and elsewhere. Fellows and non-Fellows alike are welcome to attend the meetings, at which a registration fee may be payable. A number are clinical or poster meetings held at a venue appropriate to the study. Fellows having papers suitable for reading at meetings, or material suitable for demonstration at a poster or clinical meeting, are requested to communicate with the Honorary Secretaries. Papers read at meetings are subject to peer review before publication in the Transactions.
Publications
The Society has three publications, the Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene published monthly, the Yearbook, and the on-line Bulletin of Tropical Medicine and International Health which are sent free of charge to Fellows whose subscription is not in arrears.
