Dr Yaw Asare Afrane

Medical Entomologist, Parasitologist

Dr Yaw Asare Afrane is a medical entomologist and parasitologist with a research focus on epidemiology and control of malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases. He works as an Associate Professor at the Department of Medical Microbiology, University of Ghana Medical School, Accra, Ghana and is a Visiting Professor at the Department of Biology and Biotechnology, University of Pavia, Italy. He obtained a PhD in Medical Entomology and Parasitology from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, in 2007.

He worked with the University of California, Irvine, Program in Public Health as a postdoctoral fellow, based at the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology, Kenya, between July 2007-June 2010, and as a Senior Research Associate with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (July 2010 – February 2015). Before he returned to his home country Ghana, he was an Associate Professor in the Jaramogi Oginga University of Science and Technology, Kenya (September 2010 – February 2015), during which time he became the Dean of the School of Health Sciences and later Director of Research.

Dr Afrane’s research expertise lies in vector biology and epidemiology. He currently leads a major research team at the University of Ghana Medical School on malaria entomology and epidemiology. His extensive research and publication record, has given him the chance to work as a consultant for the National Malaria Control Program of Kenya. He is a member of the Intra Country Coordinating Committee for the Ghana Neglected Tropical Disease Control programme. He is also a member of the Vector Control Group of the Role Back Malaria Partnership of the WHO. He is also currently a technical advisor to the Sub-saharan Africa International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research.
