Medals & Awards

RSTMH awards a number of medals and awards, on our own and in partnership with the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) in recognition of excellence.

Chalmers Medal

The Chalmers Medal recognises researchers in tropical medicine or global health who demonstrate evidence of mentoring and professional development of junior investigators, and other forms of capacity building. 

Emerging Leaders Award

The Emerging Leaders Award is given out by RSTMH each year to recognise those early in their careers who have made a significant contribution to leadership, including mentorship and capacity building of others.

Donald Mackay Medal

The Donald Mackay Medal is a joint Medal, which is awarded in alternating years by the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (even years) and by the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (odd years). It is open for those mid-career or senior in their career and recognises outstanding work in tropical health, especially relating to improvements in the health of rural or urban workers in the tropics.

Sir Rickard Christophers Medal

The Sir Rickard Christophers Medal is awarded by RSTMH to recognise outstanding work in tropical medicine and hygiene, and evidence of practical and field applications. The Medal is awarded every three years and is for those at a senior level in their careers.

 

Hemingway Award

The Hemingway Award is a joint award between RSTMH and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and recognises successful delivery or encouragement of translational science. It is awarded every two years and is for people at any career stage.

Sir Patrick Manson Medal

The Sir Patrick Manson Medal is RSTMH’s highest mark of distinction and is awarded to the living person whose contribution to any branch of tropical medicine or hygiene is considered by the Board of Trustees to be most deserving. It is awarded every three years and is for senior experts in their field.

 

Presidents’ Fund

The Presidents’ Fund aims to support RSTMH membership for three years for residents of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) who are unable to renew their membership or join due to financial difficulties.

George Macdonald Medal

The George Macdonald Medal is joint medal between RSTMH and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). It recognises outstanding individuals who have conducted research leading to significant improvements of health in the tropics. It is awarded every three years, and is for those senior in their careers.

RSTMH Student Essay Competition

The RSTMH Student Essay Prize is for students studying global health as a degree or any degree with a component of global health.

National Clinical Impact Awards

The National Clinical Impact Awards [NCIAs], previously the National Clinical Excellence Awards, are prestigious awards, granted to some of the NHS’ most senior clinicians via an annual competition.
