Dr Christopher Parry

Christopher joined the RSTMH Board in 2017.

Christopher is a clinician scientist with training in medical microbiology, infectious disease and tropical medicine and clinical accreditation in medical microbiology. He is the Consultant Clinical Microbiologist for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Infection and Global Health, University of Liverpool, an Honorary Research Fellow at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and visiting Professor at the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, Nagasaki University, Japan. He has been a member of RSTMH for more than 20 years.

Christopher worked for nearly ten years, over two periods, in the Oxford University-Wellcome Trust Major Overseas programmes in Vietnam, Cambodia and Bangladesh. He has also recently been based in Nagasaki University, Japan in a joint position with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine supporting the development of a new School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health in Nagasaki. He is principal investigator for ongoing research projects in the Philippines and Nepal that focus on the epidemiology and management of severe bacterial infections in adults and children.

He has had a significant involvement in post-graduate education, previously serving as Director of Studies for an MSc in Medical Microbiology at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Deputy-Director for a Masters in Tropical Medicine in Nagasaki University. He has been a member and sometime chair of the School and Faculty Learning and Teaching committees in Liverpool and Nagasaki. He has experience on several WHO working groups on topics relating to typhoid fever and currently chair of two Data and Safety Management Committees of randomised controlled trials in Bangladesh and Nepal.

Christopher is particularly interested in the role of the Society in supporting and encouraging the education and development of trainees and in influencing the strategic direction of RSTMH in global health.
