Dr Elke Wynberg
Dr Elke Wynberg is a physician and infectious disease epidemiologist based at the Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit in Bangkok, Thailand. Her research focuses on the clinical epidemiology and public health impact of tropical infectious diseases, with a particular interest in dengue and other emerging infections in Southeast Asia. She studied medicine at Imperial College London and after several years of clinical practice, she subsequently trained in Public Health (focussing on Communicable Disease Control) in the Netherlands and CuraƧao. Dr Wynberg completed a PhD in clinical epidemiology at the University of Amsterdam during the COVID-19 pandemic, with her research focussing on inequalities in COVID-19 burden and the long-term sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, working at the interface of clinical research, epidemiology, and public health practice.
Her professional interests include outbreak preparedness and response, travel medicine, vaccine impact analyses, strengthening infectious disease surveillance systems, and the impact of climate change on health. She is also interested in and committed to expanding public and community engagement in research, especially facilitating community involvement in setting global health research agendas. In addition, she enjoys mentoring and supporting the development of upcoming researchers by regularly supervising Bachelors, Masters, and PhD students.
