Professor Christopher Duggan

Christopher Duggan, M.D., M.P.H. performs clinical trials in the fields of pediatric nutrition, gastroenterology and global health. His early work demonstrated the efficacy of oral rehydration solutions for diarrhoea management in the US. He and colleagues authored the first national treatment guidelines for acute diarrhoea published by CDC, later revised and adopted by the American Academy of Pediatrics for national use.

With colleagues at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Dr Duggan and colleagues have evaluated the efficacy of micronutrient supplementation in infants and young children born to women with or at risk of HIV infection. These trials recruited nearly 5,000 infants in urban Dar es Salaam. Recent studies include the development of new biomarkers of environmental enteric dysfunction, as well as the evaluation of nutritional status on neurodevelopment. Past and present research support has come from the National Institutes of Health, the Gates Foundation, and the World Health Organization.

Dr Duggan is a pediatric gastroenterologist and nutrition physician at Boston Children's Hospital where he directs the Center for Nutrition (http://www.childrenshospital.org/nutrition). He is Medical Director of the Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation, one of the largest centres in the US for the care of children with intestinal failure/chronic diarrhoea syndromes (http://www.childrenshospital.org/cair). He is also the course co-director of the Harvard College course “Nutrition and Global Health” and mentors undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students at HMS and HSPH ((http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/faculty/christopher-duggan/). In 2019, he was named Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, one of the top-rated peer-reviewed journals in the field of nutrition.

He is Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School (where he is the Associate Director of the Division of Nutrition) and a Professor in the Departments of Nutrition and Global Health and Population at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. He is Adjunct Professor at St John’s Research Institute in Bangalore, India, and Honorary Lecturer at Muhimbili University. He has twice received the Physician Nutrition Specialist Award from the American Society of Nutrition, was the 2015 recipient of the Fomon Nutrition Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and has been visiting professor in China, India, Tanzania, and many other countries.
