RSTMH Medals and Awards 2026 open for nominations

Our RSTMH Medals and Awards 2026 programme is now open, with three opportunities to recognise success this year. These Medals and Awards recognise achievements in a variety of global health areas and for a range of career stages. Every year RSTMH gives out a number of medals and awards in recognition of excellence. Open this year are:
- Chalmers Medal
- Emerging Leaders Award
- George Macdonald Medal

These medals and awards are a celebration of those who have made a significant contribution to different areas of global health and tropical medicine, and at a range of career stages. We would like to see a diverse range of nominations across all disease areas, locations and disciplines of our community, as well as across gender and nationality. We encourage you to nominate yourselves or your peers in global health.”

Chalmers Medal
The Chalmers Medal recognises researchers in tropical medicine or global health who demonstrate evidence of mentoring and professional development of junior investigators, and other forms of capacity building. The Medal is for those at the mid stage of their career.
The Chalmers Medal was established in 1921, following a donation from the widow of Dr Albert John Chalmers, MD, FRCS, DPH. Dr Chalmers was known for being ready with help and encouragement to those early in their careers.

Emerging Leaders Award
The Emerging Leaders Award recognises significant contributions in leadership and service, including mentoring and other forms of capacity building, to the fields of tropical medicine and global health. It is specifically for those who are at the early stage of their careers.
It was established in 2016 to recognise significant contributions in leadership and service, including mentoring and other forms of capacity building, to the fields of tropical medicine and global health.

George Macdonald Medal
The George Macdonald Medal is given every three years to recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals who have conducted research leading to significant improvements in health in the tropics. Nominees must have conducted outstanding research leading to improvement of health in the tropics and is for those senior in their careers. The medal is a joint award between RSTMH and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
The George Macdonald Medal was first awarded in 1972 in honour of Dr George Macdonald, Professor of Tropical Hygiene at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Director of the Ross Institute, who died on 10 December 1967.
