Dr Val Snewin

Dr Val Snewin is Head of Global Health Research Partnerships in the UK Government Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC). Val is responsible for developing and delivering a global health research programme with Official Development Assistance (ODA), through partnerships with other funders as well as the Department’s National Institutes of Health and Care Research (NIHR).  The portfolio has improving research capacity at its heart, investing in applied health research for the benefit of people in low- and middle-income countries. With a focus on underserved research areas, these include the shifting burden of diseases towards long-term conditions, health systems research towards Universal Health Coverage and building resilience to the climate change and infectious diseases outbreaks.  Previously as International Activities Manager at the Wellcome Trust, Val was instrumental in establishing new types of research capacity strengthening programmes, shifting the centre of gravity of research funding to low and middle income country institutions. Val has a PhD in malaria drug resistance and conducted post-doctoral research on malaria transmission-blocking vaccines and tuberculosis diagnostics development.
