We were delighted that Professor Alan Fenwick OBE delivered the Christmas Manson lecture at our Research in Progress meeting on the 14th December last year.  The topic of his lecture was ‘Tropical Medicine 100 years on from Sir Patrick Manson’ and he led us through a wonderful account of the achievements and success of the last 100 years, with some food for thought about the remaining challenges. 

People with albinism (PWA) face a variety of medical and social problems, ranging from poor vision and skin cancer to murder for their body parts for witchcraft in East Africa, notably Tanzania. Albinism is an inherited disorder of melanin biosynthesis that results in a variable phenotype classified according to the mutation in one of several genes.

This was the message from Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO, at yesterday’s launch of the new WHO/UNICEF report: Achieving the malaria MDG target.
